LPB’s Annual Activity: Training of Leadership Development (TOLD) in 2022 - Article of TOLD 2022 #1

Lembaga Pembinaan Bahasa - The Language Development Institute (LPB) is one of the Student Activity Units at Sunan Gunung Djati State Islamic University, Bandung. This Organization guides its members to learn Arabic and English. Recently, LPB held an annual activity for its members, namely Training of Leadership Development or abbreviated as TOLD. Training of Leadership Development (TOLD) is an activity that contains trainings aimed at increasing the knowledge and experience of participants in the fields of leadership and language. TOLD is a mandatory activity that must be followed by LPB members who wish to continue their dedication to LPB to become the successor to the LPB management. With this TOLD, participants can improve their quality, build morals, develop skills to become good and competent leaders in facing challenges and changes.

The TOLD activity provides training and coaching so that it can increase knowledge, competence, and leadership skills for participants who will become LPB organizer. This activity also trains us to have good emotional intelligence, the ability to think critically and creatively, have problem solving skills, and train collaboration skills so that, LPB department can have a team with good performance in the future. Of course, the skills that will be obtained from this activity will be very useful for each individual and also for LPB. This organization is expected can become better organizations with programs that are intellectual and useful for their members and for the wider community.

The Training of Leadership Development (TOLD) 2022 activity carries the theme "Leadership Development to Build a Leadership Spirit with Integrity, Competence, and Solidarity." With this theme, it’s hoped that the participants can become good leaders who have this following characteristics:

  1. Mature in thinking

  2. Have the courage which will be useful in making decisions to dare and take risks in order to achieve a common goal

  3. Have a disciplined attitude

  4. Have integrity so that it can be appreciated by its members, on the basis of integrity, namely sincerity and honesty in order to build trust from its members.

  5. Having a solidarity character so the team can work together by paying attention to the surrounding conditions and maintaining a sense of brotherhood and concern for members in order to they can achieve the common goals that have been set previously.

This Training of Leadership Development (TOLD) activity was held on Saturday, June 18 to June 19, 2022. This activity contains materials that will broaden our knowledge of leadership. The first material was presented by Nenden Servia Sandora with the topic "Speech and Public Speaking". The speaker already has a lot of experience in the field of public speaking, she can be a role model for participants because of his prowess in mastering public speaking. In this speech and public speaking material, it can be concluded that a leader must have skills in public speaking in order to communicate well, because actually public speaking has benefits to inform others, to influence others, to delivering a message, to improve ourself and form our mentality.

After giving the first material, it was continued with the second material, namely "Trial Techniques" given by Rizky Alifza, S.H. whom has served as the Chief of LPB for the 2017-2019 period, LPB Advisory Board, and a Legal Consultant IR and Associations and of course he is very knowledgeable about the material to be delivered. This material is very important for anyone who joins organization, because the trial is a formal forum held within the organization to discuss certain issues in an effort to produce a joint decision, which will become a stipulation and clear rules. The results of this trial have permanent legal force so that this trial is one of the important elements in the organization. After that, the third material was presented, the third material discussed “All About Typography on Mobile” given by the speaker Hanif Abdurrahman, a freelance content creator who has a lot of experience in the graphic design field. In this third material, we are directed to think creatively in presenting content that will be uploaded on social media by paying attention to the applicable rules so that a post/content can be read clearly by the target that we are going to. In this session, we were asked to make a poster that pays attention to the rules of typography.

The last material is about "The Role of Self Building Relevance in an Organization." From this material, it can be concluded that we as students must have priorities in order to be able to manage time properly and placing our position according to our priority respective portions. We, as a students, in addition to join organization, also have an obligation to study and participate in learning on class so if we don't have good time management, we don't have a priority scale, it will lead to disaster. Therefore, in this material, it is explained how we determine priority scale and how to have a good time management so that our lives can be more structured. The materials that have been presented in the TOLD series are expected to be able to make the participants become the best people by acquiring leadership skills, good organizational methods, and changing views on how life should be lived. After each material was delivered, we were given a post test which contained questions related to the material that would hone our understanding of the material that had been delivered.

The next agenda was Art Performance, in preparing our performance, it’s trains us in terms of leadership as well as communicating and working together as a team, because the time given is relatively short so we must communicate it well in order to put on an interesting and amazing show. This Art Performance requires us to be creative without losing the languages element ​​which are the main topic of this organization. The performance in Art Performance Training of Leadership Development activity was also very impressive, the TOLD groups successfully managed to put on an interesting, amazing, and entertaining show. After we had fun in performing arts, the activity continued with the introduction of all the departments in LPB. The organizer explain the organizational structure, job description, and job projects in each department.

Before closing, there was an agenda named tracking. In tracking, the total post was five post. In each post we will be asked questions about the material that has been given and we will also play games that will make us hone critical thinking patterns in solving problems. Like the game in third post and in fourth post. In post three, we played a game of interlocking hands and then stacking them at one point and looking for a way out to release the pile of hands without releasing the hands of the other members. Then in post four, we play a game to pass a rubber through a straw that we use with our mouth. Of course, in these two games, we need critical thinking and problem solving as a leader in order to achieve the goals of these games.

This event is very useful for all of us. My personal experience after I participated in this series of TOLD activities, apart from achieving the goal of becoming a good leader, I also gained new insights and knowledge that were very meaningful to me. I also got skills in terms of discipline, be brave to take an action, building self-confidence, caring for others, and making many new friends. From the materials that have been delivered by great speakers, I can apply them in my life. Like the first material on speech and public speaking, speech is speaking in public and public speaking is the act or skill of speaking to a usually large of people. Of course, with the delivery of this material, I will search and learn more about public speaking better because the benefits of public speaking can help increase self-confidence, also helps us to become leaders, by having public speaking skills, we can convey material or information that easy to understand for others. Public speaking skills also help us to convey ideas or opinions, helps us to be more critical because choosing the right words or sentences to say is not easy, this will make our brains work more actively. If we are able to think critically, we certainly will not be easily influenced by things that can harm ourselves. 

Then the benefit of the second material that I can feel is for me who has never joined another organization before, the trial technique material really helped me to know new things which is needed in organize, with this trial, the organization takes formal decisions which will be approved by its members. I also became aware of the ethics that exist in the trial so that decision making can be carried out properly, fairly, and structured. The benefit of the third material for me who also like about graphic design, this material is very useful, I came to know about how typography should work in a design that we make. In the past, I often made a design without knowing typography techniques so the designs I made could not be conveyed in a straightforward manner to my intended target. Such as the selection of colors that do not match and the font layout is still messy. I hope this material has been conveyed well to me. As a graphic designer, I can implement this material in my next design. And the fourth material, I can take advantage that in organizing we must pay attention to other things such as our lectures, we must be able to adjust our respective portions because lectures are important for our academics and organizations are also important for us to progress and learning soft skills that are useful for our life, like this leadership skill.

Therefore, the Training of Leadership Development held by the LPB helps and directs its member to become a good leaders who can lead both for themselves and for others, because the true nature of leadership needs to be instilled in us so that we can run this life without any doubts, being an optimistic person both in attitude and speech, treating others with respect, being someone who can be trusted, deal with problems wisely, open up opportunities for communication and interaction with others, and always think twice in every decision we will make. This training of leadership also has the aim of regenerating the management of LPB which is expected that the participants who register can become a team that can work well together to achieve the goals of this organization.
